About

In the world of mineral collecting, few localities command as much reverence and excitement as Mont Saint-Hilaire. Located in Quebec, Canada, this unassuming mountain is home to the Poudrette quarry, a site that has become a true legend. For decades, this active quarry has unearthed an astonishing diversity of mineral species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. For collectors, the name “Mont Saint-Hilaire” is synonymous with rarity, beauty, and the thrill of discovery, making it a cornerstone locality in any serious collection.

What elevates Mont Saint-Hilaire from a simple quarry to a mineralogical icon is its unique geology. As a rare alkaline intrusion, the mountain provided the perfect chemical crucible for elements to combine in extraordinary ways. This has made it one of the most prolific “Type Localities” on the planet, with over 70 distinct mineral species first being identified here, and more than 440 mineral species in total! This site is not just a source of beautiful specimens; it is a fundamental chapter in the textbook of mineralogy, a natural laboratory that continues to challenge and expand our understanding of Earth’s chemistry.

Beyond its scientific importance, MSH delivers what every collector dreams of: spectacular and unique mineral specimens. From the world-famous, vibrant pink blades of serandite to the complex, hexagonal crystals of catapleiite and the many fluorescent minerals such as sodalite (hackmanite), the minerals of Mont Saint-Hilaire are as breathtakingly beautiful as they are rare. Owning a specimen from this fabled quarry is more than just adding a rock to a shelf; it is holding a piece of mineralogical history from one of the most remarkable treasure chests our planet has ever produced.

Minerals of Mont Saint Hilaire aims to describe and illustrate as many species as possible. Photos and specimens on this site will mostly be from Doug Merson or from me, Steve Sorrell. Between us, we have over 200 of the 440-odd species. Additional information, such as publications, will be added from time to time.
